Northern Maine All photos on this website have been taken in Northern Maine's Aroostook County, also known as "The County" and the Katahdin area north. Eventually we hope to cover all of Aroostook County, the Mount Katahdin Area, and the Calais area our northern most Maine coast, as well as our beloved St. John Valley, so rich in Acadian Culture and home to the St. John River and part of our border with Canada.
The Maine Woods Henry David Thoreau's book "The Maine Woods", is based on three trips to Maine he took in search of a deeper wilderness. Today, although northern Maine is much more developed than it was in Thoreau's day, it remains a wilderness, the home of both wildlife and hardy Mainers. We are a big part of the great North Woods but also home to farms stretching across rolling hills all the way to the Canadian border. Maine is such a diverse state and although we're best known for our coastal scenary Gene hopes that his photos will show people some of that diversity.
The County Aroostook County is their home, both Gene and his wife Debra were raised in the St. John Valley,so they have deep County roots. One of their favorite things to do is explore northern Maine's great forests and farm lands. No matter how often it happens encountering one of Maine's wild critters is always a thrill. Gene's been known to almost forget to take a picture when coming upon a moose or deer. Debra's work can be seen here: Maine Art Today.
The Photographer The eclectic works of Gene Cyr are inspired by Maine's rural character where nature is the true artist. His job, as he sees it, is to capture what has been so beautifully layed out before him. Living in the far northern region of Maine inspires him to be a part of this world of living things and the vast outdoors, doing his best to be out in nature every day taking photos, but at the same time trying to have as little impact on our natural resources as possible. Capturing the beauty around him with his camera, but at the same time leaving it exactly as it was so others coming after him can see it as he witnessed it.
Artist Statement
My goal is to show the rest of the world that the state of Maine is one of America's true visual treasures. People know Maine best through scenes of our beautiful coast, but Maine is so much more. For most people northern Maine is a paradise waiting to be experienced, I hope that the experience will be made a little easier through my photos. As a photographer I try to capture what nature so kindly places before me; and do it justice. As a digital artist through photo manipulations, I use my software and imagination and create something slightly different than what nature intended, and hopefully nature doesn't mind.
